Blue Ribbon Kids 2008 Activity Schedule
Weekdays during the Fair, various locations

Thursday, August 7:  Character Counts along with the Iowa Energy
Susan Knapp Amphitheater, 10 a.m.

Blue Ribbon Kids’ Club members, are you ready for a “shooting” good time?  Iowa Energy players and coaches will be on hand to explain how basketball is directly linked to the six pillars of character.  Character Counts in Iowa will get members excited about Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.  Don’t miss out on this exciting opportunity to see the Iowa Energy High Voltage Dancers, their mascot Surge, the chance to shoot some hoops and get some pointers from Iowa Energy players and coaches. 

Friday, August 8:  Iowa Pork Producers
Paul R. Knapp Animal Learning Center, Christensen Farms Stage, 10 a.m.

Blue Ribbon Kids’ Club members will get the chance to learn more about Iowa’s growing swine industry.  Did you know that for every one person in Iowa there are five hogs?  Did you know that Iowa is the number 1 state in the nation for pork production?  Kids’ Club members will learn swine facts about Iowa, but also how Iowa’s pork producers care for their animals.  Kids, you might even get to hold a baby pig!

Monday, August 11:  Monarchs Forever
Paul R. Knapp Animal Learning Center, Christensen Farms Stage, 10 a.m.

Get up close and personal with the newest attraction at the Iowa State Fair, Monarchs Forever.  This attraction is an enclosed thermal regulated tent that will house thousands of butterflies.  Kids’ Club members will learn about the butterfly’s life cycle along with being able to hold a caterpillar and butterfly.  This will be a once in a lifetime experience for the butterfly lover!

Tuesday, August 12:  Iowa Egg Council and Iowa Poultry Association
Paul R. Knapp Animal Learning Center, Christensen Farms Stage, 10 a.m.

Did you know that Iowa leads the nation in egg production?  The Iowa Egg Council along with the Iowa Poultry Association will host an activity just for Kids’ Club members to learn about how eggs are produced, where chickens live, how farmers take care of chickens and what eggs are used for.  Kids’ Club members will learn how incredible the egg really is!

Wednesday, August 13:  Farm and Fair Safety
Budweiser Stage, 10 a.m.

Farm Safety 4 Just Kids along with the Iowa State Fair will host a hands-on activity revolving around how to be safe when visiting a farm or the Iowa State Fair.  Kids’ Club members will learn about Tractor Safety, ATV Safety and Animal Safety. 

Thursday, August 14:  Iowa State Fair Food Contests
Susan Knapp Amphitheater, 10 a.m.

Kids’ Club members will hear from kids who have entered and won in the State Fair’s Food Division.  Kids’ Club members will learn how to enter and what classes are available for kids.  They will also be entered in the Blue Ribbon Kids’ Club cookie decorating contest.

Friday, August 15:  Iowa State Fair History and Tour
Richard L. Easter Museum Complex, 10 a.m.

When was the first Iowa State Fair held?  How old are the Iowa State Fairgrounds?  These questions and more will be answered by touring the Iowa State Museum along with a Kids’ Club member only tram tour of the Fairgrounds.  Kids’ Club members will each receive a ticket to the Iowa State Fair icon, the Ye Old Mill.
